Wyoming Receives $1.5M Federal Grant for Technology Initiative

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) recently received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve work zones through connected vehicle programs. This grant, part of the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation initiative, will allow WYDOT to develop a Situation Data Exchange system in partnership with engineering firm Trihydro Corp.

This system will enable WYDOT to communicate directly with drivers about work zone hazards, including delays, width restrictions, reduced speed limits, and worker presence. Third parties will also make this information available through connected vehicles. By providing real-time data, the system will give automated driving systems and drivers more accurate information to navigate safely through work zones nationwide.

WYDOT Director Darin Westby stated that the technology will provide drivers with a more transparent and accurate representation of what specific work zones look like on a given day. Once implemented, this system will make work zones safer for both employees and contractors working on these projects as well as for drivers passing through them. With this grant, WYDOT will become one of the latest states to adopt new Federal Work Zone Data Exchange standards.

Thirty-four states were awarded grants under this initiative, with funding provided for program development and implementation. These grants do not require matching funds, making it easier for states to implement these new technologies and improve road safety for all travelers.
