In January 2025, Bexar County commissioners approved a $5 million investment into the construction of a new sports facility at UTSA. The facility, known as the “Roadrunner NEST,” will be accessible to residents and will serve as the home for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams at the university. With a total cost of $35 million, the Roadrunner NEST is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the City of San Antonio also investing an equal amount.
UTSA has committed to covering the facility’s annual operating costs of $500,000 once it is completed. About half of UTSA’s students come from Bexar County, making the Roadrunner NEST a hub for sports and athletics in the area. The joint investment by the county and city reflects a commitment to providing opportunities for the community to engage in sports and recreation activities.
County Commissioner Grant Moody emphasized that the Roadrunner NEST will not only benefit UTSA but will be a valuable asset for the entire community. The facility will be available for public use, hosting competitive events and youth sports in addition to serving as a hub for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams at UTSA. With its completion date set for December 2026, this joint investment by Bexar County and San Antonio is expected to provide endless opportunities for residents in the area.
