Disney grants conservation funding to unique school focusing on science and preservation

SCICON, a magical place in the foothills of Tulare County, CA, is where fifth and sixth graders embark on an educational journey to learn about science and conservation. The Outdoor School of Science and Conservation, operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, welcomes over 8,000 students each year to its 1,170-acre campus.

At SCICON, students experience the beauty of nature while gaining a deeper understanding of their impact on the environment. They have the opportunity to hike, explore local wildlife habitats, and visit a museum featuring local items and animals. Dianne Shew, the school’s director, describes SCICON as an outdoor classroom that inspires students to become responsible caretakers of the planet.

In early 2023, SCICON faced historic flooding that damaged its habitat and affected native salamanders. The Friends of SCICON organization received a grant from the Disney Conservation Fund to support restoration efforts for the salamander habitat. Disney “VoluntEARS” also joined in by helping clear debris and revitalize the habitat.

The grant and volunteer efforts will not only restore the salamander habitat but also educate students on environmental conservation. Shew believes that every child who visits SCICON has the potential to make a positive impact on the planet. With support from community efforts and grants like this one from Disney Conservation Fund
