Special Olympics athletes showcase their skills at Spring Sports Expo hosted by Cuesta College

In San Luis Obispo, California, the Special Olympics of Southern California (SOSC) recently held their annual Spring Sports Expo at Cuesta College. The event attracted over 600 athletes who participated in various competitions such as track and field, basketball, and bocce. This marked the second consecutive year that Cuesta College has hosted this competition.

The festivities began at 9:45 a.m., with a parade of athletes followed by the singing of the national anthem and recitation of the pledge of allegiance. Local law enforcement officers provided support for the event, which also received backing from approximately 40 schools in San Luis Obispo County and over 700 community members who gathered to cheer on and support the athletes.

Scott Cusick, the awards announcer, expressed admiration for the athletes’ determination and resilience in facing challenges. He highlighted their unyielding pursuit of excellence and how they inspire others with their spirit. The Special Olympics chapters in San Luis Obispo County, Santa Maria, and Lompoc provide year-round training and competition opportunities in 12 different sports across four seasons. These programs aim to promote physical fitness, foster inclusion, and empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to showcase their talents and abilities.
