New research has revealed that individuals from Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, are at a higher risk of aging quickly and developing cancer compared to previous generations. Scientists from the University of Washington School of Medicine conducted a study using data from the UK Biobank to analyze biological age in Gen Z individuals. The findings showed a higher risk of early onset cancer, with a 12% increase in the risk of bowel cancer for each increase in biological age.
Researchers have found that the biological age of Gen Z individuals is significantly higher than their actual age, making them more susceptible to certain types of cancer such as lung, gastrointestinal, and uterine cancers. This increase in aging and cancer risk is also seen in the development of other chronic and dangerous diseases at younger ages. In addition to cancer, other health issues such as heart attacks and diabetes are also on the rise among young people.
Experts like Professor Ilaria Bellantuono from the University of Sheffield suggest that factors such as genetics, lifestyle, diet, and environmental influences may play a role in this accelerated aging process. They also suggest that spending excessive time on social media and experiencing feelings of loneliness can have detrimental effects on overall health and well-being, leading to an increased risk of premature aging and chronic diseases.
