Governor shows support for the science of reading during visit to ASH

At the National NSEA Distinguished School, Albany School of Humanities, Gov. Kathy Hochul paid a visit to the first-grade class of Deah Postiglion to observe the City School District of Albany’s literacy instruction program in action. The governor expressed her support for explicit phonics instruction and the science of reading while observing the classroom. Since 2016, the district has been a leader in this area with student results on ELA and reading benchmarks demonstrating its effectiveness.

Following her visit to the classroom, Gov. Hochul was joined by ASH fifth-grader Raylena Terrell and Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter at a news conference in the school’s library. Raylena shared her passion for reading and her dream of becoming a marine biologist, thanking the governor for supporting the science of reading for all students statewide. New York State United Teachers President Melinda Person also participated in the news conference, showing further support for this initiative.

Superintendent Hochreiter expressed gratitude to Gov. Hochul for highlighting the importance of literacy initiatives across the state at Albany School of Humanities. He emphasized how successful explicit phonics instruction has been in improving literacy rates in his district and thanked the governor for her leadership on this critical educational initiative for all New York students.
