NRAO Backs International Symposium Advancing Science in the Caribbean

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) recently participated in a significant international symposium that took place in the Caribbean. The event, organized by Professor Shirin Haque from the University of the West Indies (UWI), aimed to bring together scientists from different parts of the world to discuss the future of science and technology in the region. The symposium also sought to showcase the talents of local scientists as well as those in the Caribbean diaspora.

The event attracted a diverse group of experts, including physicists, computer scientists, astronomers, technologists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, conservationists, and leaders. Through various events, conversations, and collaborations, participants worked together to envision the future of science and technology in the Caribbean. The symposium facilitated discussions, partnerships, and networking opportunities to build bridges between Caribbean scientists, students, and the broader scientific community.

One of the key goals of the symposium was to establish a central hub for science in the Caribbean. By fostering collaboration between scholars in the region and around the globe, participants hoped to elevate all participants together. UWI has played a crucial role in organizing this event with Professor Haque leading it. Haque completed her Ph.D. at UWI and Virginia under an IDB fellowship and has a long-standing partnership with NRAO. UWI and NRAO have worked together on programs like RADIAL program that provides access and training in radio astronomy to underrepresented individuals.

Several UWI undergraduates have participated in RADIAL program with three joining this year. The symposium was led by Trinidadian diaspora Professor Stephon Alexander of Brown University Everard Findlay EIME Corp USA local chair Professor Shirin Haque with support from Simons Foundation UWI.
