76% of Italians prefer booking their train tickets online, with seven out of ten choosing this method.

Train travel continues to be popular among Italians, with a preference for online booking methods and sustainability being the main reasons cited. A recent study by YouGov, commissioned by Trainline, reveals that 76% of Italians appreciate train travel, higher than the European average of 72%. The analysis also shows that three-quarters of the Italian population have traveled by train multiple times in the past three years.

The shift in the rail industry over the past 25 years has been significant, with more Italians now preferring to purchase tickets online compared to traditional methods like buying them at the station or over the phone. Young people aged 18 to 24 show a particular interest in greener travel options, indicating a growing trend towards sustainability in transportation.

When it comes to tourism, Europeans, including Italians, prefer the train for both domestic and foreign holidays. In Italy, over half of the population (56%) chooses the train for short holidays and long weekends, surpassing the European average of 46%. The popularity of train travel for foreign holidays is also high among European respondents, with 81% planning to use trains for trips abroad.

Andrea Saviane, Country Manager of Trainline in Italy, comments on Italy’s leading position in embracing train travel and sustainability in passenger transport. Trainline’s evolution reflects changing preferences among Italian passengers and makes it one of the most successful technology companies and the most downloaded mobility app in Italy.
