German Navy Shows Interest in Buying Israeli Hermes 900 UAVs for Defense

According to the Israel Defense website, the German Navy is considering purchasing the Hermes 900 UAV from Israeli company Elbit. Lufthansa Technik has announced a collaboration with Elbit Systems on military drones through its subsidiary, although Elbit has declined to comment on the partnership. In January 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Lufthansa Technik and Elbit Systems, but an official contract has not yet been finalized.

Reports suggest that the German Navy is interested in acquiring eight Hermes 900 StarLiner UAVs for supply and maintenance. Lufthansa Technik will handle maintenance and crew training, while Elbit will produce the drones. The financial details of the contract have not been disclosed. This marks Lufthansa Technik’s first venture into UAV maintenance, having previously supported NATO aircraft fleets such as F-35 fighter jets, Chinook transport helicopters, and Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft.
