The First Ever Giant Molten Salt Energy Storage System

Denmark’s newly inaugurated molten salt green energy storage facility is a game-changer in the world of renewable energy. Hyme Energy, a Danish company, has launched the world’s first energy storage project using molten hydroxide salt to store green energy. The project, called Molten Salt Storage (MOSS), will store excess energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar in a giant battery-like facility located in Esbjerg.

Molten salt is an excellent choice for energy storage because it can withstand high temperatures without losing its integrity, allowing for efficient storage of large amounts of energy. By storing green electricity in molten hydroxide salt, MOSS creates a sustainable and reliable reserve when renewable electricity production is low. This stored energy can then be released and converted into steam to generate power when needed.

Future commercial MOSS facilities could store even more green electricity at the gigawatt hour (GWh) scale, according to CEO and co-founder Emil Lovschall-Jensen. This technology has the potential to decarbonize energy-intensive industries by providing a green alternative to traditional fossil fuels used in power plants and heavy industries. In fact, heat consumption accounts for 50% of total energy consumption globally and also contributes 40% of carbon emissions.

The newly opened storage facility will undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate its capabilities before being scaled up for commercialization in 2026. MOSS provides a promising solution to one of the biggest challenges facing the world today: storing abundant amounts of renewable energy for later use.
