Governor Kay Ivey recently approved the creation of a new public high school in Alabama that will focus on preparing students for careers in healthcare, science and technology. The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences will be located in Demopolis but open to students from across the state. This initiative aims to address the shortage of healthcare workers in Alabama.
The proposal was supported by several state lawmakers, including Senator Bobby Singleton, who praised it as an asset for the state. However, three Senators, including Dr. Larry Stutts, voted against the bill, arguing that smaller programs across the state would better serve students’ needs. Despite this opposition, the Senate passed the bill with a vote of 28-3 and now awaits Governor Ivey’s signature before it becomes law.
The new school will join three existing residential public high schools in Alabama: the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, the Alabama School of Math and Science in Mobile, and the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in Huntsville. These schools draw students from all over the state and provide a unique educational experience for those who attend them.
