The Intersection of Climate Change and Health: A Focus of the Upcoming Science Talk

“Climate change is a global phenomenon that has been affecting coastal regions across the world, and northeastern North Carolina is no exception. To help educate the public about the potential risks and hazards associated with climate change, Science on the Sound, a monthly lecture series held at the Coastal Studies Institute on the ECU Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese, will feature Dr. Alex Hodges as its next speaker.”

Dr. Hodges is a clinical professor in the Department of Advanced Nursing Practice and Education at ECU, and her research focuses on the climate impacts within Eastern North Carolina. During her presentation on May 23 at 6 p.m., titled “Ready for Change: Building Effective Climate Readiness,” she will provide a nurse practitioner’s perspective on climate change and its implications for primary care.

“The session will cover topics such as how climate change affects healthcare systems, what steps individuals can take to prepare for related challenges, and how communities can come together to build resilience against these threats,” said Dr. Hodges.

Dr. Hodges volunteers at the Community Care Clinic of Dare, providing primary care services, and also serves on the Dare County Board of Health and Human Services. Her passion for addressing climate change comes from years of working with organizations such as Americares and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she has seen firsthand how vulnerable coastal communities are to the impacts of climate change.”

This event is free to attend and will also be live-streamed on CSI YouTube channel so that people from all over northeastern North Carolina can learn more about this important topic.”
