In the southern Chinese province of Canton, 48 people have died and 30 were injured following the collapse of a section of a highway. The incident occurred around 02:10 local time on the Meizhou-Dabu highway where 24 vehicles were trapped. Fortunately, no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals were involved in the accident.
Rescue efforts are ongoing with over 500 people working to free all trapped vehicles and recover the bodies of the victims. The 30 injured individuals have been taken to nearby hospitals and are currently out of danger. The causes of the collapse are still under investigation, with suspicions that heavy rains in the region in recent days may have played a role.
This latest tragedy is just one of several infrastructure-related accidents that have occurred in China in recent months. In December, three people died and four were injured when a section of a highway collapsed in Inner Mongolia. The Chinese authorities are working diligently to investigate the cause of this latest collapse and prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
