This incident occurred when a Seahawk helicopter from the Australian navy encountered a Chinese J-10 fighter during surveillance operations. The pilot of the helicopter was forced to take evasive action after the Chinese fighter dropped a heat trap in front of it. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage in this encounter, but it could have had significant consequences if the heat trap had hit the helicopter.
Following this incident, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese demanded an explanation from China regarding the actions of its fighter pilots. He described their behavior as “unsafe and unprofessional,” calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions between Australia and China. This marks the most serious altercation between Australian and Chinese forces since a previous incident in the Sea of Japan in 2018. Despite efforts to improve bilateral relations, this recent event has further strained relations between Australia and China.
The J-10 fighter has been developed since 1988 and is currently in service with the Chinese Air Force since 2005. Furthermore, Beijing’s continued construction of artificial islands on reefs claimed by Southeast Asian countries has further raised tensions with neighboring countries.
As such, it seems likely that we will see more incidents like this one occurring more frequently unless there is a significant shift in Beijing’s approach towards its neighbors and beyond its borders.
