MSU Space Science Center Receives $2.5 Million for New Deep Space Array

Rowan County, located in Kentucky, is set to receive over $71 million in state funding for various local improvements. The focus of this funding will be on infrastructure and transportation. A portion of the funds, specifically $2.5 million, will be allocated towards the MSU Space Science Center. This money will be used to construct the Morehead Deep Space Array, a project that is expected to provide numerous opportunities for MSU once it becomes operational.

Dr. Ben Malphrus, the Executive Director of the Space Science Center, expressed excitement about the potential benefits of the new array. He highlighted how this technology will enable MSU to engage in activities such as operating assets in orbit around the moon and on its surface. This advancement positions the university as a key player in supporting NASA and other commercial lunar ventures through enhanced tracking and commanding capabilities for lunar spacecraft.

The Morehead Deep Space Array is designed as an interferometer incorporating multiple antennas that function collectively as a large antenna. This unique setup will not only elevate the services provided by the Space Science Center but also support NASA and commercial lunar ventures in their missions. With an estimated completion timeline of 24-28 months, the array will play a pivotal role as an Earth station for satellite mission support and as a valuable training facility for students seeking practical experience in space mission operations.

Representative Richard White announced that Rowan County would receive more than $71 million in state funding for various local improvements, with a focus on infrastructure and transportation.
