The Mastodon Arts and Science Fair held at Jefferson College Fieldhouse in Hillsboro recently concluded after a week-long event. During the award ceremony on Saturday, Festus High School senior Neo Roth received recognition in the art category. His painting, which focused on mental health awareness, won the “Best in Show” award and the “Flying Eagle” trophy sponsored by Home Service Oil Company. Roth’s artwork will be featured in the Jefferson College Art Exhibition in July and early August, prompting him to consider pursuing a college education in art.
Another Festus High School senior, Kylie Richardson, captured first place for senior artwork at the fair. Her prize includes free tuition to a one-day art workshop and her portfolio will be displayed at Jefferson College this summer. Richardson enjoys experimenting with various artistic styles and techniques.
Brandy Brooks-Fehlker, an art teacher at Festus High School, emphasizes the significance of the Mastodon Arts and Science Fair for her students. She believes that participating in such events can help students develop their skills and gain exposure to different artistic styles and techniques. Samantha DeClue, the Executive Director of the fair, expressed satisfaction with this year’s event and looks forward to collaborating with more schools to engage students in next year’s fair.
