Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Webster as its new science projects director. Webster will take over from John Gauvin, who has been in the position for nearly 30 years and will be retiring. However, Gauvin will continue to work on some of the science projects already in progress for the cooperative.
AKSC is a cooperative of the Amendment 80 fleet that fishes for flatfish, Pacific Ocean perch, and Atka mackerel in Alaska. Webster brings with her extensive experience in Alaska fisheries science, having previously worked as a fisheries scientist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, where she focused on recreational groundfish research in the charter fishing sector. She also managed the research program for Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology Program, supporting projects across various industries.
Webster’s expertise will be an asset to AKSC as it continues to collaborate with fishery scientists from NOAA and other institutions to conduct research aimed at modifying fishing practices and gear to help members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats. The AKSC is committed to ensuring sustainable fishing practices and protecting our oceans for future generations.
